Waze routes drivers safely around Boston Marathon road closures

Boston is racing this morning! And no, we’re not talking about traffic violations. New England is sending in its best and brightest to run the Boston Marathon — covering a 40K historic route headed to Beantown.

That’s great news for runners — but with the series of road closures around the greater Boston area to accomodate them, it’s potentially pretty bad news for drivers. Fear not, New England! Wherever a carmageddon looms in the shadows, Waze’s hardy community of drivers comes through to save the day. Boston’s Wazers got onboard and pitched in to update Waze’s live map, reflecting road closures and other obstacles unsuspecting drivers may hit today.

Thanks to them, Waze will route drivers in the Boston area this morning safely around the marathon, so they can get where they need to go in a jiffy.

If the marathon interferes with your morning commute through Boston, Waze will send you through the best alternative route until roads are re-opened. Look out for changing traffic conditions, too, as drivers change up their normal driving routine.

Up-to-the-minute maps and routing info, compiled collaboratively from local driving communities — that’s what Waze is all about!

Waze wishes good luck to all of today’s runners (and drivers!). May you all reach your finish lines with ease.

Stock up on points with springtime road goodies!

Spring has sprung, Wazers! And in honor of the season, starting today, you’ll see eggs and bunnies dotting the map in Waze’s very own egg-hunt. Bunnies are worth 5 points, yellow eggs worth 3 and pink eggs worth 1 extra point, so get out there and rack ‘em up while you can.

Speaking of which, if you’ve ever wondered about other ways to amp up your points, there are a few other ways you can…just opening Waze each day and driving earns you points, as does contributing road reports, editing the map and participating in the Waze forum. And an easy way to earn a bunch at once is to fulfill a few of the bonus achievements. To check those out click the more arrow of ‘My Rank’ on the Waze Scoreboard.

Have fun out there guys and wishing you the springiest Spring possible!

Waze’s CTO and Co-Founder, acknowledged as mobile innovation trailblazer

We’ve been fortunate to receive a lot of attention, especially as driving communities around the globe have continued to expand, and each new story about us – from personal loveletters to Waze from individual bloggers to features in top-tier national, or international, press – makes us incredibly proud of this thing we’re all creating together…

But the one story we came across today was something a little different.

It isn’t centered on the company’s growth, or our wonderful user community. It’s about the man behind it all, Ehud Shabtai, our CTO and one of our co-founders, who was the one who came up with the idea for Waze in the very beginning. Today, VentureBeat included him in their list of the top 10 disruptive individuals who are reshaping the mobile industry, and we think that’s just awesome.

They suggest that Ehud created the open-source project that would become Waze because he kept getting lost, but that’s not quite what happened. Ehud simply saw how navigation devices, paired with human collaboration and real-time information, could make the whole enterprise that much more ’smart’, and right he was!

Now, beyond the really nice acknowledgement of Ehud’s idea, it turns out that the article also includes a vote for the ‘most disruptive tech innovator’ at the bottom of the story, and while ‘disruptive’ isn’t a word we who know Ehud commonly associate with him (he’s pretty chill), if you’d like to support Waze’s contribution to reshaping the the notion of navigation within the mobile space, it’d be great if you could click the radio button next to Ehud’s name and cast your vote.  Thanks, as always, for your support, everyone!

Spread the word about Waze and get a ‘Secret Society’ sticker or magnet!

Recently, we were curious about finding out how the majority of people came to hear about Waze, and after doing an informal poll via social media – as we assumed – we saw that word-of-mouth plays a big role. It’s people like you, sharing info about an app they love with their friends, that have the power to create new driving communities all around the world. In fact, there are certain countries where we’ve never done an official launch or gotten any press whose communities have been created by word-of-mouth alone!

The benefits of spreading the word are clear – the more people using Waze in your area, the better it gets. Routes improve, ETAs become even sharper, and traffic information amps up big-time. So how about it? An easy way to spread the word is to post our guided tour on your Facebook page with a few words about how you benefit from using Waze. And as a thank you for helping to get others on board, now through the end of April, we’d like to offer you your choice of a Waze secret society sticker or magnet (see below) in return for posting the guided tour on your page. To get your magnet, please fill out this form, and allow about 6-8 weeks for delivery. Many thanks for your support Wazers!

Waze launches in South Africa!

Every now and then, we do an ‘official’ launch in a new territory, and just recently, we added South Africa to the mix! Partnering with MiX Telematics, the launch builds upon the community of more than 30,000 ‘early adapters,’ based mainly in Johannesburg, that already exist. We’re excited to be branching out into new territories, with more announcements to come later in the year…in the meantime sanibonani* new S. African Wazers, we’re glad to have y’all on board!

*- ‘Sanibonani’ is how to greet two or more people in Zulu, South Africa’s most widely-spoken language.

Waze: Feelin’ the Love a lot these days…

Happy Heart Day, Wazefolk! We hope you’re feeling all the good energies on this day (and every day) and get some nice acknowledgment from your honey, if you have one, your good friends, your family, or even just some random beauty that the Universe sends your way…if all else fails, know that we love ya! You guys are truly at the core of all that we do.

Over on our end, we’ve had some super nice acknowledgments lately. One of the nicest was that we were included on this Fast Company list: The World’s 50 Most Innovative Companies! Number 7, in fact, on the list of the 10 top Social Media enterprises – alongside the likes of Facebook, LinkedIn, Tumblr, and other movers and shakers. Many thanks, Fast Company! You sure know how to make an app blush…;-)

Wazer meet-ups – the next big thing…

Recently, we convened a couple of super-user meet-ups in Parish5 and Palo Alto, CA, bringing together top Wazers from around the world with the intention of connecting them to one another face-to-face (many already knew eachother from the Forums), and seizing the opportunity to glean their invaluable feedback about our product…

With users like ours, it goes without saying that both meetings were a great success, but what surprised us even more was the initiative taken by local Waze communities to create meet-ups of their own!

Just a few weeks ago, 14 Slovak Wazers and 1 from the Czech Republic gathered to discuss all things Waze and came up with a list of feature requests and bugs that they sent over to our attention. Meet up organizer, Wazer guri211, also shared some positive feedback about recent updates such as the 3.0 design and new map editor, which was really nice to hear. And only a few days ago, the Hungarian Wazer community had a small meet-up, set up by Wazer Wroadd, with the intention of organizing a larger meet-up with Waze staff in Budapest sometime in May.

Without getting too corny, you guys never cease to amaze us. We love the way a few super committed Wazers have organized to bring users together in their communities, and we want the trend to continue! If any of you out there want to bring a Wazer meet-up to your area and can bring together a dozen or more local Wazers, we’d love to send one or two of our staff people out to share some behind-the-scenes info and hear what you guys have to say. If it sounds like something you’d like to do, don’t be shy, make it happen! We really enjoy the chance to get out and meet you guys…
